I FEAR FISH has legs!


As said in our main description, I FEAR FISH is a strange combination of fishing game, dungeon crawler, roguelike, and psychological horror. 

What's the game idea again?

The general idea for the game loop is you go fish during the day, sell your catches for better fishing gear and tackle, and at night you'll be visited in your dreams by the fish you caught, hunting you in turn! A shop available at certain points in the night will offer temporary one-night-only power ups to help you survive the ordeal. And if you managed to score the legendary fish in the pond in the daylight hours, they'll be waiting for you with a challenge at the end of the night.

Okay, but like. what's the gameplay?

Fishing in the day will be a reflex based mini-game, not necessarily punishing those who fail it, but rewarding players who can hit the buttons in time. Sell your fish, upgrade your gear, then sleep tight and hope the bed bass don't bite! You'll wake in a strange looking dreamscape, fighting off fish one by one in turn based combat, strategically defending and attacking to make your way. Defeating the legendary fish will allow you to move to the next fishing hole, where more fish (and fights) await!

I FEAR FISH was a goofy idea I came up with while trying to think of funny game genres to mashup with fishing mechanics. "What if... fishing game... dungeon crawler?" I'm so glad Rin and Dominic thought the idea was good enough to join me in making it happen for this course, and I can't wait to have more things to show! Please give it a go when it comes out on the 7th!

I've genuinely been so excited to work on this project. The concept alone is already so much fun to play around with, and the space it leaves for stretching around with uniquely dispositional art directions for the night and day segments along with the mechanics has been an utter joy to conceptualize in my esoteric madman's scrawlings of a game design notebook.

I've played so many dungeon crawlers and rogue likes before but had never played one that added fishing into the equation. I was immediately hooked on the idea. I only got even more excited when we started working out the day/night cycle mechanics. I'm so excited to show off what our minds have been cooking up when I FEAR FISH comes out!
